The risks of fitting your own car battery

Mistakes can often be made when changing your own car battery.

Car batteries can generally last for five years provided they are given proper maintenance. Its longevity is however also dependent on other factors such as the climate, the vehicles operation, how you use your vehicle (start regularity & distance travelled). Overcharging or undercharging the battery can also cause premature failure.

Before you consider doing it yourself, think of the following :

Do I have the necessary safety gear ?

Am i strong enough to lift the battery out and a new on in ?

Am I technically savvy to complete this ?

Do I have the necessary tools and devices ?

Am i prepared to accept the consequences if things go wrong ?

Is it just easier to get it done by the experts ?

Firstly, using a voltmeter, test the battery voltage, then start the car and test that the alternator is charging the battery correctly. Often people replace a battery due to a faulty alternator. If you have decided that it is your battery, then ensure you have a memory minder that ensures your vehicle retains its electronics and data before removing the old battery. The biggest risk with changing over a car battery is when trying to disconnect the dead battery in the wrong order. Before changing your car battery, you should ensure that the new battery you are replacing it with is fully charged. Then start with disconnecting the negative cable first followed by the positive cable. Undo any of the hold down clamps/brackets and ensure they are well clear of the battery terminals to avoid an accidental short. Be very careful not to drop or misplace the nuts. Lift the dead battery by removing it in an upright position. This is to prevent its acidic solution from leaking out. Respect the weight of the product when lifting as often its in an awkward position and can easily cause an injury to your back or hands. Place the old battery in a safe place to avoid contact with acid residue. You can then place the new battery at the position of the former one.

A roof top tent is one of the quickest camping options you can get, thanks to their set up times of under three minutes. A roof top tent also provides added safety by keeping you well above the ground and away from nocturnal predators and any flash flooding.

Adventure Kings Roof Top Tent has just arrived and is designed to excel as a convenient and safe camping solution for Aussies. The Adventure Kings Roof Top Tent is quick and easy to set up - it can be ready for use in under three minutes, and can be packed away just as quickly, thanks to the internal bungie cords that pull in the tent walls while it’s closing.

The tent is made from tough 320gsm poly cotton ripstop canvas with high-quality polyester medium to heavy gauge self-repairing coil zips. The fly is made from durable poly oxford with a 2000mm water head capability.

Traditional polyester edge binding has been replaced with durable flat fell seams ensuring no fraying and minimal risk of wicking (the ability of water to be drawn upwards by capillary).

All seams are sewn with a poly cotton core spun thread allowing for natural cotton swelling ensuring needle holes are filled and watertight when wet. The 75mm high-density open cell foam mattress makes for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Open cell construction allows air to circulate through the foam ensuring moisture quickly dries.

The roof top tent is fully waterproof due to blade coat waterproofing application, and the windows feature a polyester sand-fly and midge-proof mesh woven using one of the finest mesh grids available - 150gm/M2. This still maintains anti-tear characteristics.

All non-UV items such as elastic loops used traditionally to secure window toggles have been removed and replaced with bound poly cotton adding strength and eliminating premature degradation.

The aluminium ladder is suitable for installation on almost any model of 4WD coming to a total of 2.1m high. Ladder extensions are available for higher vehicles if required.

The PVC cover is made from heavy-duty 600 GSM, which means the tent is well protected from any low overhanging trees or other obstacles.

We just fitted this set of 4 x 1300mm drawers to a Ford Ranger for one of our Locksmith customers - Dependable Security.
We also fabricated a work platform across the top to make a nice work space. To enhance this vehicle even further we fitted a 1500 Watt Inverter to power electric tools and chargers.

This job was around $2,000 and about half the price of that of a previously quoted competitor
